Ira W. Luke, III, who goes by Luke, is from Philadelphia, known as the “City of Brotherly Love” who joins the Flaherty Family Foundation as the Region 2, (DC, MD, VA and Baltimore) College Advisor. His goal is to bring a holistic approach to the college advising and placement processes.
Luke has always had the spirit to “give back” to youth and community since he was in high school. He served as a mentor in both Philadelphia Freedom Schools and City Year Greater Philadelphia, providing a sense of purpose and pride when helping youth in his and surrounding neighborhoods.
His wide array of experience in guiding youth and their families through college and career planning have led to successful outcomes in three different states (PA, MD, NJ) and the District while holding positions such as College Counselor, Dean of Students and Assistant Principal of School Culture.
Luke also spent three years as a Dual Enrollment College Counselor where he helped students and parents navigate the process to college courses for credit while still enrolled in high school. While in this role, Luke used his innate ability to connect with students and families from all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. Under his recruitment and outreach, participation in the Dual Enrollment program increased in multiple school settings, which made students more prepared to enter college upon graduation.
Luke is an advocate of the growth mindset which will allow for students to present their most authentic version during the college planning process. Luke believes scholars should set goals that can be accomplished through a collaborative effort of hard work and accountability. He is excited to work with our scholars and their families and believes that helping them see positive outcomes inside and outside the classroom will allow them to tap into their unlocked potential!
Luke enjoys time spent with his son and extended family and friends. He is a fan of all Philly sports and plays basketball, baseball and tennis recreationally. He has a passion for completing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts and finding ways to be creative in the kitchen!
